Tell us a little about yourself. Dr. Larry Vern Newman is a professor with Columbia Evangelical Seminary and teaches Church Growth/Renewal, Pastoral Theology, and Theology. Dr. Newman was ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1966, and ordained by the Iowa Conference of the United Church of Christ in 1974. He served as Pastor or Interim Pastor in the Assemblies of God and various independent community churches and several congregations of the United Church of Christ. Dr. Newman also served in administrative positions, and taught Pastoral Theology and Apologetics at Open Bible College, Des Moines, IA. He served as Executive Director of Maranatha Ministries, Inc., Kirkland, WA (a parachurch organization involved in Teaching, Youth, and Radio ministries). He is listed in the Dictionary of International Biography, Cambridge, England, Who's Who in Religion, and Personalities of the West and Midwest. He is a member of the Society for Pentecostal Studies. Dr. Newman earned a B.A. (Theology) from Northwest University, Kirkland, WA., an M.Div. (Church History) from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA., and a D.Min. (Church Growth/Renewal) from Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Theology, Pasadena, CA. Theological Persuasion: Reformed, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Charismatic. He has been published in several Pentecostal magazines, and is the author of the recently released book: “The Ultimate Evidence: Rethinking the Evidence Issues for Spirit-baptism”
What was your motivation behind this project? My intent is to clarify and refine the Pentecostal "Initial Evidence Doctrine"
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that Christians of all persuasions will come to understand this controversial doctrine more clearly and thus come to a better understanding of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I have come to a better understanding of my faith and how it has been impacted by the biblical, historical and cultural issues researched and studied.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Donald G. Bloesch, Daniel B. Pecota, Ray S. Anderson, Karl Barth, T. F. Torrence, John Stott, Elton Trueblood, Gordon Fee, Richard Lovelace.
