Amy Wallace’s Healing Promises gives a glimpse of real-life tragedies from a Christian’s perspective. FBI Agent Clint Rollins battles cancer while dealing with the physical, emotional, and spiritual changes in him, his family, and his job. His wife Sara fights both herself and God as she juggles caring for Clint and her family, a job, and an unexpected pregnancy. The Rollins family learns that in order to be victorious, it must rely fully on God.

Clint Rollins works for the FBI in the Crimes Against Children Unit; the cancer diagnosis only hinders an important case in which Clint is involved and highly invested. Meanwhile, Sara Rollins works in a cancer care center, but her job soon becomes very personal when her husband is diagnosed with the very disease she helps others fight. The diagnosis puts a strain on their marriage and their home life. The Rollins family learns to deal with the symptoms of chemo treatments and a surprise pregnancy. It isn’t easy, as Wallace communicates in the book. Will the family hold strong to the values in 1 Corinthians 13:4, which says, “Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous”?

Wallace conveys perfectly the roller-coaster feelings of cancer and its effects on both the sufferer and his or her friends and family. The various characters’ thoughts and prayers are raw and genuine. While reading Healing Promises, I felt as though I was in the actual story, rejoicing in triumphant moments and hurting when misfortunes happened. Wallace writes to include her readers in the story.

The novel was certainly entertaining; I was slightly disappointed about its predictable ending. The characters were fully developed, and the story line flowed and kept me interested. However, the ending was fairly obvious. There were also so many characters introduced at the beginning that it was hard to keep them straight, and I constantly had to flip back and forth to remind myself who was who. While not being graphic or explicit, there is some perversion (related to a case in the Crimes Against Children Unit) that might be disturbing to some readers. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone younger than a high school freshman.

All in all, I enjoyed the book. My favorite parts happened when the characters were struggling spiritually, questioning God about their circumstances. The novel offered legitimate and valid questions that I’m sure everyone asks during a difficult situation in life. I would highly suggest Healing Promises to anyone (particularly a woman) who either has cancer or has a close family member who is battling cancer. The novel puts a spin on the disease and its effects that is refreshing and encouraging. I recommend it. My heart raced in certain parts and, in others, I couldn’t wait to flip the page to find out what happened. The most valuable aspect of the novel was how it uplifted me spiritually, allowing me to see that it is okay to question God because He is sovereign and everything works out for good (His glory) in the end for those who love Him.
