Elijah McCoy (1943-1929)Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.Psalm 128:1 Back: Elijah McCoy was born in Canada to parents who had escaped slavery in Kentucky by traveling along the Underground Railroad. He studied engineering in Scotland before obtaining a job with the Michigan Central Railroad. In 1872, in his home workshop in Michigan, he invented a "lubricating cup" that could automatically drip oil when and where needed on the steam engines of trains and boats, and received a patent later that year. His invention was so popular people inspecting new equipment would ask if the device contained the "real McCoy"-the real thing, the highest quality. Elijah McCoy later established his own firm and was responsible for 57 U.S. patents, among them the folding ironing board and the lawn sprinkler.
