Publisher's Description

This book explores the art of conversation, and the process of good listening and counseling. Right From the Start: A Pastor’s Guide to Premarital Counseling is a guide for pastors and counselors to help couples prepare for and succeed in married life, not just pass a test. It discusses the five main points of discussion covered in the companion piece, Right From the Start: A Premarital Guide for Couples.Counselors will learn that it is okay to say no to a couple, because the point is to help the couple find out if they are actually compatible. Marriage is for life, and it is your duty as a counselor to advise couples who realize that.Through story-telling, David and Lisa Frisbie open up the doors for couples to hash out their ideas, differences, and misunderstandings before anyone is hurt in the future. It’s better to prevent harm rather than trying to heal the hurt.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  We are marriage therapists and family counselors, based in Southern California. David teaches family studies at Southern Nazarene University and, as an ordained elder, has performed more than 350 weddings, literally around the world.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Marriages are under enormous stress. Pastors and counselors want to help, but don't always know where to start. This book is an in-depth guide to helping couples CONNECT and COMMUNICATE at the heart level.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Pastors are bright, caring people. They're busy, so they don't have time to master everything and study all subjects. This book is written in a relaxed, conversational style --- but shows you how to approach the difficult work of helping couples CONNECT and COMMUNICATE.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  We learned from pastors and counselors in a wide range of places: We quote probably two dozen of them in this book. Our thanks to these bright and capable leaders in Canada, Europe, Asia and the United States. We are grateful for your help!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  We read Larry Osborne, Max Lucado, Don Miller, Rob Bell, John Ortberg, John Eldredge and others. We love to learn!! David teaches at SNU and has taught and lectured in premarital counseling at colleges and seminaries all over the world.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  As pastors and counselors and others who work with couples: WE CAN DO BETTER. It's time for us to step up, bring our A game, and MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE in relationships and marriages. By God's grace we can see this happen!
