Are the eBooks stand-alone programs or do I have to have a "reader"?

I am not familiar with the ePub format.

You need a reader. However, you can just use the eReader program that is free on this and many other websites right on your PC. As long as the program accepts epub files you should be able to use it.

I am aware of them but I don't have a reader and I love the real books that I can hold in my hands and place on a shelf and look at

No. Generally the eBooks are set up so that you cannot remove or copy content from them.
