The Anchor Bible is a critical and scholarly treatment of the Scriptures. This volume covers the apocryphal book of First Maccabees. Jonathan Goldstein begins with a lengthy introduction covering the authorship, date, setting, sources and character of the book as well as including some comparison between Macabees and other historical works of the time, most notably Josephus. Goldstein then goes on to discuss the book, analyzing it historically and theologically. This commentary is an excellent source for any scholar studying the intertestamental period.
