Publisher's Weekly

John (Safe Harbor series) sets her new novel in the world of diplomacy. Sheridan Montgomery is the wife of Eliot Montgomery, ambassador to Venezuela. When an assassin’s bullets cripple Eliot and wound his wife, the traumatized couple retreats from the world to an off-the-map hamlet in Mexico. Sheridan is called from there when her father, a U.S. congressman from whom she is estranged, is dying. She returns to her family home in suburban Chicago to confront her past and make some decisions about her present, which includes her atrophied marriage to an invalid. The tangled relationships are engrossing and evolving, especially between Sheridan and her sister, Calissa, and between Sheridan and Luke Traynor, the government man who saved her life in Venezuela and returns to complicate her life. The criminal elements in the plot are less compelling than the human elements. The religion element required in Christian fiction is unobtrusive and natural to a story about healing. A thoughtful and engaging novel. (July) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

In Ransomed Dreams by Sally John, Sheridan Montgomery has grown used to living an isolated life in Mexico with Eliot, her husband who was crippled both physically and emotionally by a severe bullet wound eighteen months earlier. Then Luke Traynor, the man who saved her life the day Eliot was shot, re-enters her life. He brings news of her father’s stroke, and Sheridan is yanked from the safe haven she created for herself. She must confront the truth of her father’s past, while battling the growing feelings she has for Luke.

Sally John tells a story filled with human anguish and deep struggles. Her characters, especially Sheridan, are well rounded and endearing to readers. The story’s plot may at first resemble a tale too often visited—a woman falling in love with another man because her marriage has grown stale. However, John’s story is surprisingly refreshing and completely upholds biblical truths of faithfulness in marriage.

Ransomed Dreams shows the stark reality of a woman forced to live a life she never would have chosen. Sheridan must learn to “listen for Jesus,” as her mother always told her. Verses such as Jeremiah 33:3—“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know”—are clearly reflected here. Readers of this book will not only enjoy a good story, but they may also learn valuable truths along the way. – Ruth Anne Burrell, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
