Probably because there is domestic violence in the movie. But the loving theme of a family who wants to keep a child over-rides this. If my children were young I would watch it with them and explain what was happening. Read the book and you will understand.

There are scenes where a character is drinking and acting unbecoming. The birth father of the boy is an alcoholic. At one point he hits his wife. He also roughs up the boy leaving bruises on his arm for not wanting to take a shower.
