Although I haven't read this particular collection, on some collections it really doesn't matter which book you read first, but as I have read other books belonging to collections, I prefer to read the collection starting with the first book, that way you get to know the characters and the history/background related to the collection.

No, it appears you don't need to have the earlier novels since the later books feature different characters than the first three novels.
