Questions & Answers for Familylife Passport2Purity-Weekend Retreat Kit

Question

Should my husband take our 16 and 14 yr old sons?

Is it advisable that my husband would take our 14 and 16 yr old sons together for the weekend away? Are they too old and should both go? we have had the birds and bees talk with both of them but not as in depth as this series.

I just took both my daughters together, ages 12 & 13. I am so glad I did! We had awesome conversations and we all bonded so much! I definitely recommend that siblings do it together. Your 16 year old may think some parts are a bit cheesy...but there is so much value to the lessons. Your husband won't regret taking both your sons!

My advise would be that your husband do it. My husband thinks that boys would be more open to talk about certain things without mom there, and my husband said he would feel uncomfortable after listening to the materials if he were there having the discussion with our daughter in a few years. We have decided that we will meet for the special dinner at the end of the weekend so I can also celebrate his commitment but he will go through the materials alone with my husband. I do know other people who have done it with both parents but for us, we have chosen to do it this way. Blessings.

It was intended to be used one on one with a parent and child, but if the children get along well it can be done together; although there will only be one "passport/male student book", so they would need to share. In regards to their age, it was intended for pre-teens or young teens, but the maturity of the children is the most crucial determinant for if this program is right for your situations.

You may also find information helpful to your personal situation if you read through some of the customer reviews as parents have adapted it to suit their own needs and commented on their outcomes there.

It is suggested for 1 night, but I booked 2 nights at the hotel and I am so glad I did. It gave us more time to chat more in depth and I never felt rushed.

Question

What Age is best to do this?

Is there an age this is targeted for, or is it case by case based on what they are being exposed to? Either way, what do you think the guidelines are for when to do this?

I think ten is a great age for boys (I've taken my oldest three sons in their 10th summer). This catches them before the 6th grade.

With my oldest two son's I just asked them "So are girls as icky as the used to be?" I did this while we were by ourselves to avoid the embarrassment of having their siblings around.

In general this is targeted to tweens and early teens, and it's a helpful resource. You're right though --- if you've got tweens or older children that are more "sheltered" in their background, these issues could wait a bit longer. For mainstream tweens and early teens, this material deals with things they are hearing and seeing and thinking about already.

I have daughters but I think you could although if you could wait a little while longer and see if your husband will step up more in this area, I think it would be better. On my mother daughter weekend I came back feeling refreshed and closer to the Lord so it may even bless your hubby if you could get him to do it. I'll pray for you, that God helps you to make the right decision and that He helps you t follow through (you'll need that if you end up going-lol! Lots of blushing moments)!

answer 2
"The Weekend Retreat Kit" can be conducted by a member of the opposite gender, but it is highly recommended that it be done by the parent who would be comfortable discussing sexual purity with the child which is generally the parent of the same gender. Since each child and parental relationship is different, please use discretion when considering who to have operate the retreat.

Please feel free to read the customer reviews as there are some reviews where both parents accompanied their children on the retreat.

This could be broken down to 5 sessions I think BUT I would not recommend it for a group. One, it does tell the how to's. My daughter cried when she heard that section. It was necessary and time but very private. Also, some thing that needed to be discussed between the mom/daughter were confidential and some children and parents wouldn't want others to hear it. Also, some of the topics are optional and need prescreened by the parent. It was a topic that could cause controversy (it's an issue that is not clear to everyone in the Bible). All through out this, the parent and child are discussing what is appropriate for their family....areas that are very different from family to family. I hope this helps. If I'm too vague, I'm try to keep my post "clean" so I don't alarm any readers!

It was designed to be used by a parent and child on a retreat away from society. It is possible to do as a group study and over several sessions, but there would need to be some adaptations to compensate for deviating from its design.

My kit included an address from the author to purchase additional "passports" for the child. They seem helpful for organizing the discussion and activities, but the program could be completed without it.

Due to the sensitive nature of the information covered it would be best to do each child separately with their own workbook. Unfortunately we do not carry the workbook as an individual item so it would be necessary to purchase 3 kits.

boys and/or girls?

Does the one book cover both boys and girls or are there separate books to order? DOes each book come with just one journal/passport? I have a son 13 and daughter 10 that will be both going through this. Suggestions?

The kit includes a 57-page student and parent manuals, five audio CDs, and a commitment passport. The passport is not sold separately.

Audio sessions are as follows: 1) 27 minutes; 2) 43 minutes; 3) 54 minutes (contains separate
sessions for boys and girls with optional excerpts); 4) 32 minutes; 5) 56 minutes. Also
contains 30 minute parent session and 40 minutes of memory verse activities. Designed for a mother and daughter or a father and son when the child is between the ages of 10 to 15
years old. Although it works best to complete the material on a weekend away from your home, you could complete it over a period of four or five weeks. The weekend experience is recommended
because your child may be more open to discussing the topics away from his or her normal
environment.

While the study is primarily designed for Father/Son or Mother/Daughter talks, a mother could still take a son through it with some adjustments (see the material for more information).
