Zondervan Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus

If Jesus were to sit down with you right now and have a DTR (Define the Relationship) conversation, how would you respond? Are you truly his follower or just a fan-or perhaps someone who doesn't even care about the difference? Not a Fan invites you to make Jesus not merely the object of your admiration, but the very center of your life. Through biblical teaching, anecdotes, and humor, Kyle Idleman explores what it means to truly be a follower of Christ. He also shares several powerful Not a Fan stories--testimonies from fellow followers who turned to Jesus. Don't miss this wake up call to radical discipleship!

Question

What is needed for small group study?

If we choose this study for our small group what exactly is needed to complete the study besides the dvd kit? Do we need the journal and paperback? Is the journal in the kit the same as the one that can be bought separately?
Thank you,
Jody

The journal is an excellent tool to use with the book. My husband, who does not like to read, loves this book & journal.

Leaders guide which includes DVD and book and leaders manual. It can be done with just the movie but to dig deeper, the participants should read the book. The journal, I would say, is optional. I found it too much to have 4 or 5 entries daily. My suggestion and what our group did was book and movie.

I am leading a small group with this book. We are not using the "Follower's journal," I read through it and didn't find it particularly great/helpful. The group members do not have the book either and it is going fine. My co-leader and I read passages and go over 90% of the book verbally and added our own questions and applicable bible verses to expand. Some of the questions are very personal and some group members aren't comfortable talking about them. I'd suggest telling members to bring their own journal. When we ask a question, we have the group journal a bit, and if they want to share they can. But if they don't want to share, at least they can go through the questions by themselves! There are so many questions in the book already that the follower's journal isn't necessary. It is a great book, I encourage everyone to have a copy, but it also isn't necessary to have a successful small-group when they don't have it.

I have read the book only but it would make for excellent small group material if your group is open and honest with each other. You can use any loose leaf notebook as a journal. I would highly suggest each group member have a copy of the book.

Although they recommend you getting the journal, you do not need it to have a good small group. There are not many questions in the material but we did small groups without the journal and they went great. We just expanded on the questions given. I would recommend reading the book. It is quite good and gets you to ponder the question, am I just a fan. If we are honest with ourselves, sometimes we are.

I think the journal is a must for young adults up to senior adults. I chose not to use them for my students because we are challenging them in other areas too so I thought the journal would be a little much on them. It is a great way to continue the study every day and will enhance your small group meetings by using the journal.

The DVD kit provides you with the DVD (has six sessions) and a Leader's guide with questions to discuss before and after the DVD. It also includes a copy of the journal. You do not need the journal if your group decides not to use it. It is for use during the week. However, I would recommend it as Kyle does as well. You do not need to buy the book. I recently bought a copy for myself because I was enjoying the study so much. So really all you need at bare minimum is the DVD kit. (PS - my group really enjoyed this)

The study kit for small groups requires everything included in the kit. The paperback book is not required. While it may be possible to do the study without the journal, there is strong recommendation to use it to get the most out of the overall study. The Journal sold separately is identical to the one in the kit.
