Susan Wise Bauer wrote the Writing with Skill for students to begin to work through independently, and the text is written directly to the student. Organized by days, each "step" progressively moves students through the workbook as they move from one day to the next. Covering the basics of composition, outlining, sentence skills, beginning literary criticism of poetry and prose, writing narratives and descriptions, and researching and documenting sources, the course culminates with a final project. Using extensive literary models and step-by-step instructions on the lesson concepts, students will gain the tools needed to write with clarify and confidence. All source material is included; students will need to write their assignments in a separate book. Grade 5-8. 544 pages, softcover.
Questions & Answers for W W Norton Writing with Skill Student Workbook Level 1; Level 5 of The Complete Writer
On their websight it says Writing With Skill is for gr. 5-8. I saw that here it's just grade 5. Did you look at the product and think it would be only a gr. 5 level? The reason I'm wondering is because I'm debating using it for my 7th grader next year. Thanks! Mrs. Miller

We use it for a 5th grader at the recommended pace (4 lessons per week) and a 7th grader at an accelerated pace (8-12 lessons per week) in preparation for Writing with Skill Level 2. The 7th grader is able to complete the work (and it is a lot of work) in a fair amount of time and understands the concepts being taught. The excerpts included in Level 1 are challenging and very high quality. We are working through the Level 1 book with her to try and make sure that none of the concepts are missed before moving onto Level 2 (our understanding is that Level 2 will be building on the skills taught in Level 1). She is coming from a background in writing from the exercises in Shurley Grammar (through grade 4) and IEW (grades 5 & 6).
