Tell us a little about yourself. I served in the USAF first as an Intelligence Analyst, then as a Weather Officer. I'm a Meteorologist who worked many years as a Research Scientist in Atmospheric Physics. After earning an advanced degree in Computer Science, I served as a Systems Programmer at Boeing before retiring in the Seattle area, where my wife and I enjoy small-group ministry, our seven grandchildren, and where I pursue my love of writing.
What was your motivation behind this project? Hide and Seek was my first novel. In it I attempted to weave some of my interesting work experiences into a thriller told from a Christian worldview. This project was, to some degree, an experiment to determine how God wanted me to spend my retirement years. I feel confident that He answered my questions, and I've now written six novels in the past two and a half years.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Hide and Seek is a story of first love and redemption. Through the brilliant heroine, it illustrates that regardless of a persons intellect, most barriers to faith are the heart-rending, existential questions, not intellectual objections. The story emphasizes that all such questions are answered in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? As Christians we want our lives to positively impact others. This requires us to be both vulnerable and genuine. When we write stories, we cannot do it well without also being vulnerable. While letting others read my early drafts of Hide and Seek, I learned that being an author was going to make me feel vulnerable, exposed to the world. This was an unexpected form of accountability that writing imposed on me, the need to be genuine. If I'm authentic, I don't have to fear what's revealed about me in my writing. I may need to be corrected from time to time, but that is a good thing.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My writing style is a bit like Tim Downs and I really enjoy his books. I've learned a lot about writing for women readers from Lynette Eason, Margaret Daley, Christy Barritt, and DiAnn Mills.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: The same God who revealed Himself to us in stories gives us the privilege of revealing Him to others in our stories. I thank Him for that privilege and pray that I will never take it lightly or misuse it.
