Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a write-at-home mom with a preschooler underfoot, a busy pastor-husband, and a bun in the oven, which means this book is something of a miracle. But writing is in my blood, in my bones. Its one of the ways I connect with God. After working in youth ministry for seven years, I began publishing with the bestseller "Walking with Frodo" (Tyndale) and have since published numerous devotionals, including "The One Year Coffee with God." This book, "Mommy Time," follows in that vein: part memoir, part spiritual reflection. When I'm not blogging at saraharthur.com, you can find me volunteering with youth at Sycamore Creek Church in Lansing, MI, where my husband ,Tom, is pastor.
What was your motivation behind this project? As a new mom I felt totally overwhelmed bringing a human being into our lives, not to mention all my bodily changes and the relentlessness of care-giving. Yes, there are lots of joys! But motherhood is hard. I thought it was important to be honest about thatso often Christians are tempted to sugar-coat our experience and cover it up with sentimentality. I wanted to open up a space for other moms to acknowledge their experience and say, God is okay with the fact that Im having a hard time. And God is here.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? One of the best ways Ive found to stay balanced during the crazy transition of motherhood has been to talk with other moms. And thats what I hope this book is: a conversation, a story, one new mom sharing with other new moms what God is doing in her life. In that sense its less a devotional book than a memoir, or maybe a devotional memoir, tracking my spiritual reflections during the first three months of my sons life. I know other moms have similar stories to share!
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? It was my husband who began praying for my sons body while giving him a bottlesince there isnt much else to do besides sit there. He prays for Micahs little feet, that he will stand strong in the Lord; for his legs, that he will walk with Jesus all his days; for his stomach, that he will feed on Gods Word; etc., all the way up. I learned through writing this book that rather than texting or talking on the phone or checking Facebook, we can take those parenting moments and turn our thoughts toward God.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I'm kind of a geek, so most of my influences are literary: C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jane Austen, etc. But I'm also a huge fan of Christian music artist Sara Groves, whose song "Generations" inspired one of the devotions in this book. Contemporary author and poet Kathleen Norris inspired yet another devotion, perhaps my favorite one (and the most difficult to write), "The Long Goodbye." Of course the book itself is dedicated to my own mom, Peg Faulman, who is a wonderful mentor and grandmother (love you!).
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: To new moms: you are not alone. Lots of moms, including me, fall into the trap of presenting ourselves as totally togetherwhich just perpetuates that feeling of isolation, like youre the only one flunking motherhood. But we are all there, sister. Im sitting here at my laptop unshowered, no idea what to make for dinner tonight, checking my phone fifty-seven times a minute to make sure Micahs daycare isnt texting me about some crisis. So were in this together. And meanwhile we have a God who holds us and our children in the palm of his hand, and who isnt particularly concerned that the same load of laundry has been in the washer for three days. We rest in grace.
