Educators Publishing Service Explode the Code Placement Test

Designed to assess the reading skills taught in the Explode the Code series, teachers will be able to analyze their students' performance to determine appropriate placement within the series. Six placement tests will determine decoding and encoding skills through two Primer, two Elementary/Intermediate and two optional tests for syllable division and word identification. Tests will focus on sound recognition, sound-symbol relationships, spelling, word reading, and more. Scope & sequence, teacher directions, answers and placement guide are included. Pages are reproducible; spiral-bound.

I wouldn't use this. There is a scope and sequence on EPS Books website (just google for it). If the child has no knowledge of English, I'd start with book 1. The student will whip through it, if it clicks. English is a very difficult language. Skip the half books for the lower levels if the whole books click. Do several pages a day. The wonderful thing about these books is that they develop reading comprehension along with vocabulary and phonics. Phonics Pathways is an adult literacy book that would be helpful to teach reading to a non-English speaker. I think ETC is better though and would click quicker because of the pictures. Beyond the Code is also a great series, though it is geared to younger students. EPS Books' website has a lot of resources for struggling readers that are geared towards older students.
