Beacon Hill Press Heavenly Tongues or Earthly Languages

To many persons, the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit are believed to be manifested principally by speaking in tongues. ... Tongues has often been a divisive element among Christians, since those who practice it often claim a spiritual superiority over those who don't. In this study, Dr. Goodell examines the principal New Testament texts that speak of this phenomenon. He carefully focuses on the context of the verses where tongues are mentioned and gives scholarly reasons why one ought not to feel like a second-class Christian if one doesn't speak in tongues. Furthermore, taking advantage of the ambiguity in the Greek word for tongues, which also means language, Dr. Goodell shows that speaking in unintelligible speech is not what the New Testament meant by speaking in tongues.
