Editorial Reviews

This title finds beauty and value in a world of small creatures that crawl, fly, and jump, with first-person narration by the sister-brother team of authors adding to its charm...Riveting color photographs of the life stages of each bug accompany its description. Especially impressive are the artful close-ups showcasing the differences in tiny eggs...Intended to inspire budding entomologists to get their hands dirty and scare mom with some creepy crawlies in the process, the volume satisfies on both scores. Older readers will glom onto the wealth of knowledge about life cycles and information on how to grow the best host plants for these bugs, while the picture-book format will undoubtedly elicit excited choruses of "Gross!" from younger readers. The species highlighted are commonly found across the United States and readers are challenged to find these bugs for themselves, with tips provided on how to raise moths and, importantly, protect bug habitat...At its heart, this is a book about noticing and preserving the invertebrates we take for granted. It intrigues throughout and leaves readers with the feeling that their own backyard is a wonderland waiting to be discovered. —ForeWord Reviews

Tell us a little about yourself.  My brother, Wayne Richards, and I are co-authors and nature photographers with a special interest in butterflies. We've written several award-winning books.

What was your motivation behind this project?  We love to see all the pieces of the puzzle so to speak, so we hand-raise insects in order to photograph every stage of their life cycle.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  We want nature lovers, from the curious to the serious, to understand more about the world around them and be able to identify bugs in every stage of their development. In other words, don't kill that creepy caterpillar - it's going to become something beautiful.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  We learned so many interesting and wonderful new things about the tiny creatures that live in our own backyards. We are amazed by their design details.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Now that would be quite a long list indeed! Basically we enjoy all kinds of nature books that include beautiful photography and fun facts. The Lord's creation is our classroom!

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  We love to answer reader's questions on our website at ButterflyNature.com. Our motto is: Learning today to care about tomorrow.
