The Bible is the Life Application Study Bible with thumb indexed, CBD Stock No: WW434601. Yes it does attempt to change the gender in a neutral way, but that is not a problem for me because I have studied the original text that is translated man, woman, etc. This should not be a problem as long as you compare the KJV, NKJV, and NASV in the context of your study. (I personally consider the NASV the closest to the original text.) Then you will understand what the NIV writers are trying to do with their translation. They also leave out some verses of Scripture that they have determined were notes added because they decided they were not in the original text. An example is 1John 5:7. which reads in the NIV, 1John 5:7, For there are three that testify," leaving out the following: KJV 1John 5:7 "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."
This might be a textual translation problem because of the textual translation they are using, or a personal opinion of the writers to edit too narrowly. As a Theologian I don't agree that the text has to be modernized as much as it has been because there is a danger that it becomes a commentary rather than a true translation from the oldest Hebrew and Greek papyri. Many modern day translations fall into this category as they are becoming more a commentary than the actual translation from oldest papyri text. For the New Testament, I personally use the Nestle-Aland Greek text translation held by most theologians as the oldest scriptural papyri. Aside from the current changes, I can live with the NIV knowing the writers are just trying to clarify areas for those who are not schooled in theology, or Bible studies. Be assured that the KJV, NKJV, NASV and the NIV, (with exceptions of wording changes in the NIV,) are still as close to the original textual translations and are still extensively used by teachers, preachers, and evangelist. I recommend the Life Application Study Bible in any version especially for the conservative notes provided, especially if you reference other versions memtioned. I purchased the Bible for my wife because she is in a bible study that uses this version. I personally use the KJV of the Life Application Bible for my teaching and preaching. The Life Application Bible is great purchase price for a modern translation and from a trusted source, the Christian book Club

answer 2
The "gender-neutral" version to which you refer has an entirely different translation name: "Today's New International Version" (TNIV).

The NIV remains the NIV.
