Customer Questions & Answers for
Apologia Educational Ministries Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal

Love the regular Apologia notebooking journals, but find the writing a bit too advanced for your student?

Apologia's Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal provides grade-appropriate activities specifically geared towards younger students who aren't as advanced in their writing abilities. Almost the same length as the regular journal, the notebooking pages are designed to suit students struggling with their handwriting and writing skills; dashed writing lines, cut-and-paste, coloring pages, and fewer writing activities make the junior notebooking journal perfect for struggling older students or easily adaptable for younger K-3 grades.

Coloring pages, scripture copywork, vocabulary flip-cards, puzzle pieces, "take it further" ideas, diagrams to label, word bank/fill-in-the-blank, and other fun lapbooking pages are included, as well as full-color minibooks. 208 non-reproducible pages plus 61-page full-color section. Spiral bound, softcover.

Questions & Answers for Apologia Educational Ministries Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal

Question

I don't know if I should use the regular notebooking journal for my 3rd grader.

I would say it depends on the writing ability of your third grader. I am currently using the Junior version for both my kindergartener ( with more assistance) and my second grader. If your third grader enjoys a lot of writing, and wouldn't be overwhelmed by needing to write a lot, then you may want to look into the regular version. I found that using the same one for both students made it easier for me planning-wise, and the Junior version is flexible enough to adapt and add extra activities if you feel it's needed for your older student. One downside, however, is that because the Junior version has all "primary" lines, in a couple of places, my second grader felt there wasn't enough room to record all the information he wanted to include. This was easily remedied by letting him continue on an extra sheet.

Although, I haven't seen the regular version. I think that the Jr version would also be suitable for a third grader.

The junior notebook I think would be better for your 3rd grader. The regular notebook seems to be to complicated for the elem grades.

Yes, you can. There are many coloring pages, but they are really good quality. So if your 3rd grader enjoys coloring, go ahead and get the junior notebooking journal for both. There is enough higher level material in it to keep the older child engaged in activities other than just coloring.

answer 5
I would encourage you to use the Jr. notebook, unless your 3rd grader enjoys writing. The Jr. notebook has everything, just not as much writing. This is a wonderful book and they will enjoy being able to use it at their level without feeling overwhelmed. The idea is to have what they learned to "stick" with them, not overwhelm them.

I think the junior notebooking journal would be just fine for a 3rd grader! It is a little more "fun" in appearance too.

answer 7
I am using the junior notebooking journal for my second grader and the regular journal with my sixth grader. Looking at both, I think the junior could easily be used with both first and third grades. My younger child can use the junior coloring pages and handwriting while my older child participates in the more challenging exercises in the regular journal. My DD used Apologia Zoology I & II in fourth grade, before the new notebooking journals, so we made our own. The new journals are much easier for me, less copying and beautiful layout.

answer 8
Your choice of Notebooking Journal would be based on your students writing skills. This is designed for students with limited writing skills; younger students that have not yet mastered handwriting, older students that are delayed in handwriting mastery, older students with learning disabilities, and students that are new to written narration.

answer 2
Having looked at both journals, the biggest difference I see is in the expected writing ability.

The Notebooking Journal is made for children who are able to do quite a lot of writting.

The Junior version includes copywork in both printing and cursive. The amount of writing expected is far less, with more pictures to color, books to create instead. Lines in the Junior version are "primary" lines ( wider lines with the dashed line running down the middle). I have found that even my beginning writer in Kindergarten is still able to use the Junior version. My more experienced writer in grade two is also able to use and enjoy this version.

Jr. Notebook is for younger students, probably around Kindergarten or even preschool. If you Google it you can find a description about this particular journal. The other journal is for average elementary K-6th. Best wishes for prosperity.

answer 6
The Junior Notebooking Journals are suitable for students that are not adept at writing and still mastering handwriting. With coloring pages, few writing lines, using primary lines (three lines with a dashed middle line) and more cut and paste vocabulary work, younger students will really enjoy these ready made notebooks!

It says "All rights reserved." So I think the author really doesn't want the book duplicated. It is such a great, fun book for them to have, and fill out in their own way, with coloring, pictures of projects they'll complete, so you will want a separate book for each child, so it will be an individual, original work when completed, that will be all their own.
