One of the unique benefits of reading a book based on a series of sermons is seeing the way in which each chapter/sermon builds on the previous ones. In Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones unfolds the words of Jesus recorded in John 14:1-6. Originally preached in 1951, the sermons are a wonderful balance of the historical and the practical, of the theological and the pastoral. At the outset, Lloyd-Jones shows man's greatest need and then proceeds to show how only the gospel can meet that need. In some places he pleads, "Do you know God -- do you know him as your Father? If you do not, then call out to Christ immediately." In other places, he speaks blunt truth, "We cannot mix the gospel of Jesus Christ with anything else; it is either this or nothing." He moves through various passages of the Scriptures to teach about the Law, sin, Satan, eternal punishment and imputed righteousness. Far from being a watered-down, pie-in-the-sky treatise on how to have "quiet nerves," this is an unashamedly biblical exposition of the gospel and its effects.

The final chapter is a brief look at the remainder of John 14, concluding with what Lloyd-Jones calls "the supreme blessing of the Christian gospel," the promise of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Everything in the sermons leads to the final plea of a pastor's heart, "Oh, make certain that he dwells in you, for if he does, your heart will not be troubled, neither will it be afraid." – Pamela Glass, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
