This last volume in Crossroad's Spiritual Legacy series focuses on the life and writings of St. Bernard of Clairaux (1090-1153). In 1115, Bernard helped to found what was perhaps the most influential new monastic order of the middle ages, the Cictercians. As Abbot of the Cistercian community in Clairvaux, Bernard found himself in the midst of the politics of his day and earned a reputation as a peacemaker in the controversies surrounding the papacy and the wars between England and France. Bernard was also a great writer and his masterpiece, Sermons on the Song of Songs, helped earn him the honor of being named a "Doctor of the Church."
