Can democracy flourish in Muslim society? What does the Qur'an say about women, minorities, human rights? Are Islam and the West on a collision course? After 9/11, much has been written about the inevitability of a clash between Islam and the West, as their worldviews compete for global supremacy. Recent developments have done little to challenge this thesis, or the West's negative image of Islam. The author compares and contrasts contributions from "traditional" and "progressive" Muslims. Voicing at least two Muslim opinions in each area of debate, this book challenges the idea that all Muslims think identically. While Muslims and Modernity is designed primarily for use an undergraduate textbook, reference to accessible Internet material, to literature and to popular as well as scholarly sources will broaden its appeal to a general readership. This book's discussion draws on post-colonial theory, feminist analyses, anthropology, cultural and religious studies, politics and philosophy.

Tell us a little about yourself. I am an ordained Baptist minister. I was a missionary in Bangladesh for three years. I have served as a University Chaplain, within the ecumenical movement,as associate pastor of an inner-city multi-racial church, and as a professor and University Teacher in the USA and the UK.
What was your motivation behind this project? I was convinced that there is a need for a readable and balanced text that analyses contemporary Muslim thought on a range of quite contentious issues. The book presents at least two Muslim opinions in each area of debate (human rights, democracy, gender, minroities, war and peace) including what might be called 'hard-line' or extremist views and liberal and progfressive vocies. It does not pretend that some Muslims do not advocate extreme views but it also shows clearly that there are other, modrate Muslim voices. As a Christian, I beleive that we must not bear false witness when we try to represent other people's beliefs. Written from a post- modern perspective, the book always asks for whom texts were written, who benefits and who loses as a result of the version of Islam being presented?
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? An infiormed, balanced and discriminating overview of contemporary debates in Muslim thought.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? The main influences on my thinking, research and writing have been Wilfred Cantwell Smith, Edward Said, Cliffod Geertz and Kenneth Cragg.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: While this book is written for an academic audience and attempts to be a 'value-free' text, it stems from my Christian commitment to promote peace and understanding betweeen different communities and faith traditions.
