Publisher's Description

Java with the Judges is part of the Coffee Cup Bible Studies, a series of Bible studies for women in compact, workbook format that examine the "life and times" of certain Bible characters and the books of the Bible that pertain to them. Each study is to be read over a four-to-six week period, and study sections are broken down into short, daily segments designed to fit reader's busy lifestyles.
Understanding that time is precious, the Coffee Cup Bible Studies are patterned in such a convenient  way that they can be read during brief windows of opportunity  that allow for meditation and study (breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, etc.). Scripture is provided from the NET Bible (New English Translation). making Bible study convenient for occasions when you can't carry a Bible.
As Sandra sprinkles unconventional thought processes throughout the study, she shatters preconceived myths about the commonly known judges and sheds light on the more obscure ones. As a result, more emphasis is placed on the vulnerabilities of these men and women and the fact that God chose each of these flawed creatures to use for His greater glory.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Fifth-generation Oregonian. I believe we need to engage the five senses in our study of God's word. I'm a wife of one husband, mother of one child, and teacher of wonderful students at Dallas Seminary (DTS).I'm working on a PhD in Humanities - Aesthetic Studies after earning my ThM at DTS. I love Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky and Handel's Messiah. I also write medical thrillers (Lethal Harvest, Deadly Cure, False Positive). I think believers need to use our "sanctified imaginations." A developed imagination helps us imagine what it's like to be someone else, which in turn helps us "do unto others as we would have them do unto us."

What was your motivation behind this project?  After years of doing Bible study, both solo and in a group, I envisioned the kind of study I would most like...one that allowed active study on weekdays, passive devotionals (aimed at application) on the weekends, small enough to go in a diaper bag, that included the entire Bible text I'd need so I would not have to carry a heavy Bible to the doctor's office with me to study during free minutes; one that lent itself well to both individual and group study; one that appealed to more than the visual-only participant; and one that wasn't written like the writer had a perfect Christian life. It needed to have a binding I could file on my bookshelf but that had a spiral on it so I could write on it without the book flipping open. Voila! The Coffee Cup Bible Series.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  A life-changing encounter with the living God as the reader meets Him in His Word.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  One big influence on this book was the group at www.soulpersuit.com, who interacted artistically with the Espresso with Esther study. Some participants were non-artists, yet each found a way to give expession to her contemplations. What participants created is available for viewing on that site. I love the stories of Deborah, Jael, Hulduh, Samson's mother, and Hannah, each of whom appear in the pages of this particular study. Another of the Coffee Cup books considers Esther. There's also Mocha on the Mount (Sermon on the Mount) and Solomon Latte (Song of Songs).

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  My web site at www.aspire2.com has additional info that relates to each study. For example with the Java with the Judges study, I have links to art in which Samson or Deborah are portrayed, and links to additional study resources.
