Differences in the first few books

Can anyone tell me if there are differences in the first couple of books? I know in the old series these books were not gender specific but these ones claim to be, I'm just wondering if I need to buy two complete sets or just supplement the older books for my younger boy when he's ready? Thanks!

The revised books speak directly to the child as a boy or girl. Because of this it would be difficult to use the book geared toward one sex for the opposite sex.
