Tough question. The NRSV is the version probably most recommended by academics. Which leads one to see it as a very accurate translation. If your friend grew up reading the KJV he may find the ESV more to his liking. I grew up United Methodist so I find the language easier to read because the RSV and NRSV are what I grew up with. You can go to various website to see how Bibles are translated. Cokesbury gives a pretty good explanation. I have numerous versions but stick with the NRSV and refer to other versions when I'm having trouble or am curious. You will always find arguments as to which is the "most" accurate. Don't know if this helps.

answer 2
The NSRV is seen as one of the most accurate translations of the bible. It is quiet good to read also. Now the question of if you accept all the Wesley study notes as respresenting the scripture accurately is another matter.

answer 3
The NRSV is considered to be an accurate and readable translation which is a successor from the original King James Version. I use it and like it. I also use the Wesley Study Bible (in the NKJV) and really like the scholarly study notes. They help you dig deeper into scripture without being overly biased to one particular way of interpretation.

No, it doesn't. And having bought one, I feel that's a pity. Especially since it does not have cross-references either.
