Product Description

In the twilight of the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands, the Germans have taken everything Cornelia had to give, even what was most precious to her. Now Gerrit Laninga-a man who puts God and country above all else-arrives at her house, needing help. She is terrified for herself and terrified for her family, but most of all, terrified of the pain she might feel again if she allows herself to love Gerrit. Her hope is to be free from her paralyzing fear.

Gerrit is a known and hunted Dutch Resistance member. When he comes to Cornelia's home for shelter, he's drawn to her strength and kindness. When he asks her to contact the local Resistance on his behalf, she refuses. Gerrit is determined to find a way to continue his underground work without putting Cornelia or her family in harm's way.

Publisher's Description

A stranger’s life hangs in the balance. But to save him is to risk everything.
The war is drawing to a close, but the Nazis still occupy part of the Netherlands. After the losses she’s endured, war widow Cornelia is only a shadow of the woman she once was. She fights now to protect her younger brother, Johan, who lives in hiding.

When Johan brings Gerrit Laninga, a wounded Dutch Resistance member, to Cornelia’s doorstep, their  ives are forever altered. Although scared of the consequences of harboring a wanted man, Cornelia’s faith won’t let her turn him out.

As she nurses Gerrit back to health, she is drawn to his fierce passion and ideals, and notices a shift within herself. Gerrit’s intensity challenges her, making her want to live fully, despite the fear that constrains her. When the opportunity to join him in the Resistance presents itself, Cornelia must summon every ounce of courage imaginable.

She is as terrified of loving Gerrit as she is of losing him. But as the winter landscape thaws, so too does her heart. Will she get a second chance at true love? She fears their story will end before it even begins.

Editorial Reviews

“Based on the author’s family history, this moving tale not only offers insight into the moral and physical struggles of those under the duress of war but also vividly captures the time and place. A good choice for readers who enjoyed Mary Doria Russell’s A Thread of Grace.” -- Library Journal

“In an adventurous tale that reads like a movie script, Liz Tolsma weaves faith in seamlessly, moving the reader with her characters’ convictions to create a captivating debut novel.” -- Bookpage

“This book was a fascinating look at WWII from the Netherlands perspective, one I hadn't heard before. It captured my interest and wouldn't give it back until the last page!” -- CBA Retailers + Resources

“Tolsma crafts strong characters and easy-to-visualize scenes. The inherent danger of Nazi occupation is apparent. Relevant biblical connections remind the reader that God is always in control, no matter how dire the situation may seem. Tolsma's story is a way to remember the past and those who gave their lives for freedom.” -- Romantic Times

Tell us a little about yourself.  Liz Tolsma has lived in Wisconsin most of her life, and she now resides next to a farm field with her husband, their son, and their two daughters. All of their children have been adopted internationally and one has special needs. Her novella, Under His Wings, appeared in the New York Times bestselling collection, A Log Cabin Christmas. Her debut novel, Snow on the Tulips is her debut novel. When not busy putting words to paper, she enjoys reading, walking, working in her large perennial garden, kayaking, and camping with her family. Please visit her blog at liztolsma.com and follow her on Facebook and Twitter (@LizTolsma). She is also a regular contributor to the Barn Door blog.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I have long wanted to tell this family story. My generation and my children's generation know nothing of hardship and deprivation like those who survived WWII in Europe. Stories like these need to be told before they die out forever.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope that people will understand what courage everyday citizens demonstrated and what true courage and faith look like.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I had the privilege of interviewing three Dutch men who lived through the Nazi occupation, two of them in hiding. Their faith through the entire situation amazed me. How could they praise God in the midst of such unimaginable trial? It brought me a deeper understanding of what trust in God looks like and what faith is all about.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My parents instilled a love of reading in me that I carry to this day. My fifth grade teacher encouraged me in my writing and gave me my dream. One of my favorite authors is fellow WWII author Sarah Sundin.
