Carol Ann Smith, S.H.C.J., a spiritual director and retreat guide, has extensive experience with Ignatian spirituality which has shaped her ministries of preparing spiritual directors in Diocese of Toledo, Ohio and encouraging lay people in their faith development. She served as Director of the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Marquette University for ten years. She is a member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and holds graduate degrees from Villanova University and Catholic University of America.
Eugene F. Merz, S.J., a Jesuit, has offered spiritual direction and retreats based on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and given Ignatian Spirituality workshops around the world for laity, priests and religious men and women. His years of ministry within the Society of Jesus, in the diocese of Des Moines, Iowa and also at the Center for Ignatian Spirituality have focused upon the spiritual renewal of priests, religious and laity that was encouraged by Vatican Council II. Merz holds graduate degrees from St. Louis University.
Smith and Merz are the authors of the widely acclaimed Moment by Moment: A Retreat in Everyday Life, a groundbreaking book which made the retreat process of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius available to a wide audience for use in homes, parishes and many other settings. Like Finding God in Each Moment, it was based on their years of experience in accompanying others on their faith journey.
