Please note: The question of safety on this PVC toy is addressed by the company which designs and makes this nativity playset. This comment will put your mind at ease regarding the safety of this Christian toy for children: In response the comment about PVC toys being unsafe: The main concern with PVC products was the pthalate chemical used to harden the plastic. All our products are made from non-pthalate PVC which is the new standard from the government. Safe. I have six children myself and I have no hesitation to allow my children to play with our toys. I hope that is helpful. Rob Anderson Cactus Game Design, Inc.

No, he is separate. He kind of falls out of the manger quite easily. Although I love the set and so did my son, I wish his hands were extended....he looks like a little stick with a face!

Question

Do the figures feel like (softer) rubber or hard plastic?

I am just wondering what this PVC feels like. I used to have a nativity set for my own children that felt like rubber (and I loved that set!), and now I am getting these for my niece's & nephew's children. - Thanks.

This set doesn't feel like rubber really, but it's not as hard and slick as a lot of figurines out there. The surfaces are textured (for instance, the camel looks/feels like he has little rivets of hair all over him). The camel's legs are bendable, but the rest of him is not. It's a matte, softer PVC - not a super hard, slick kind.

Question

What are the dimensions of the baby Jesus figurine?

Some purchasers have stated that they've given the set to 13-month-olds to play with. Others state that the baby Jesus is too small for such young children. Therefore I'd like to know what its dimensions are, so that I can judge for myself. Thanks!

Now that I think about it, I wouldn't trust a very small child with the baby Jesus. All of the rest of the figures would be fine. Baby Jesus is probably 2-2.5 inches long and .5-.75 inch wide and maybe .5 inch tall. I didn't actually get out the measuring tape and I'm just going off of memory since it's currently in my son's room and he is sleeping. Like I said, all of the other pieces are perfect for small hands, but not small enough to become a choking hazard.

It is too small for a 13-month old. My two year old grandson does not put things in his mouth, so we felt it was safe for him to play with it.

Most of the pieces are small enough to fit in a toddler's mouth, so I do not recommend letting children under 3 play with it without supervision. I noticed that yesterday when a two year old picked up the sheep and immediately tried to put it in her mouth.

I have already given my set as a gift so I have no dimensions, but I would definitely not give it to a family with a toddler. My first thought when seeing baby Jesus was that he is a definite choking hazard. He's probably about 1 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.

I'd wait another year, if you didn't get it yet. The star is small, and if broken off, could be a choking hazard. The baby Jesus is also quite small. If you want him to be able to play with it, he will be much more capable of using this set effectively in another year.

I would say it's borderline, only because at that age they would try to stuff even larger objects into the mouth. But generally pieces are not too small. I would say yes, but with supervision.
