The goal of this book is simply to convey what Bernanos wanted to say as the Christian he was. Thus, at the center of our study stands the Church, and indeed the Church as a source of joy, which is what she was for Bernanos: as communion of saints, which is to say, as love become reality and as treasure house of sacraments, which were for him the very origin and form of Christian life. Compared with these aspects, the written Word of God took second place. Bernanos was no great reader of the Bible; the Old Testament in particular was wholly foreign to him. His book was Christ's commandment of love and its contemplation in human life. Translated from the original French and German.
