City On A Hill Not a Fan: Small-Group Study Kit

Presenting a new small group study from City on a Hill Productions. Twenty times in the New Testament, Jesus issued a compelling and challenging invitation to Follow Him. He’s not interested in mere fans. He doesn’t want enthusiastic admirers. He wants Completely Committed Followers. Based on the engaging approach of Kyle Idleman, this one-of-a-kind small group study examines what it means to deny one’s self and truly follow Jesus.

This unconventional small group experience is a cinematic journey through a series of six mini-movies providing a unique perspective to help shape today’s believer into a first century Christ-follower. Follow the journey of Eric Nelson, a man leading a compartmentalized triple life as a pleasure-seeking rebel, a cutthroat corporate executive, and a nominal Christian. When confronted with a near death experience, Eric embarks on a spiritual journey that transforms his commitment to Jesus Christ and tests the faith of his friends and family.

Study Kit Includes:

  • Small Group Leader’s DVD Tutorial
  • Six 30-minute lessons of cinematic story telling
  • Easy-to-follow Leader’s Guide for facilitating your small group gathering
  • Thought provoking 42-day Follower’s Journal designed to assist you and your group in your journey

We used the DVD on the first meeting to introduce the book. BUT I only let them see 'chapter one' of the long DVD. (Up to Eric being taken to the hospital and Kyle arriving). It was a GREAT 'teaser'!!! Really got the group off to an exciting start. I have not used the DVD every time, but the DVD lessons are great to show the progress of the change in Eric. The book is great and I recommend it.

The movie is pretty much an overview of the Small group Study. You don't have to watch the movie before you do the Bible Study. I do recommend that you watch the DVD lesson and look over the questions for that week in the leaders guide before you do the lesson with your group. It wouldn't hurt to watch the movie.

The movie and the DVD study videos are the same. The small group study is just the movie broken into pieces.

The 30 minute videos are made to be watched in your small group and followed by a discussion about the movie. The videos are intertwined so I think someone that only sees one or two of them won't understand who the characters are and why the events are happening.

I recommend that the leader of the group watch the video first, that way you can be ready to ask questions about it and answer questions about it. i watch them on my own first then showed them to the class. They build off of each other. i started the set on a sunday, and some of the kids were not there, so when they came back on WED. it was kinda hard for them to understand everything without watching the first one. i had to explain the first video to them

Not sure of what you mean seeing the movie before the small group study is started. The kit contains two DVD's that have six lessons total and a guide segment for the Leader to facilitate their small group (or large group). They do suggest that the Leader/Facilitator watches all six sessions/lessons prior to sharing with the group. Since I have accomplished this, I now see the reason for viewing all the lessons before sharing but it is not imperative that you must do this. The first session works on the principle of starting with a tragedy (something like seeing the end of the story first and working back). Each session following gets into the background of how you got to the meaning/lesson of the first session. You are given insight about the character of each individual personality after the first session. In other words, by viewing all the lessons in advance (by the Leader/Facilitator) you see how all the pieces, in the overall story, fit and they fit very well! Hope this helps!! God Bless your efforts.

In our group we have the books, but not the journals. The young women in the group, in their 20s are essentially not reading the book. A few are but not all. We use the questions from the study guide and the DVD. Its been a good discussion, I think the book would make it better, but they are not going to be doing it. I also loved the long version of the DVD, but the DVD lessons are great too.

The study is based on the leader guide book, DVD lessons, and the followers journal. the Not a Fan book isn't needed for the Bible Study, but is another helpful tool to use. It wouldn't hurt to read it.

the follower's journal is especially helpful. The book helps add things and is helpful if someone misses a video session - although the content is similar it doesn't seem to correlate chapter by chapter with the six video sessions.

We accomplished the Not A Fan study with our Men's Bible Study group and it was well received. I did not have the book and a Leader's guide came with the DVD's. Our group felt that the DVD's were excellent containing a great story of struggles in this life on earth and why we sometimes question the Lord and why some hold back when it comes to asking the Lord to be in our hearts and to direct our lives.

I think this Bible Study is geared more towards adults, but it could be used for all age groups. They do have a teen edition of Not a Fan that is geared more towards teenagers and the younger generation.

Not for young children as it covers the grief and loss of a family in reaction to a young father. Unplanned pregnancy is also on one of the lessons.

We purchased this for our youth program. In preparing for leading the class, we watched it at home with all of our children. It was excellent for all ages. There will be a lot that younger ones will not understand when it comes to implied situations.

Question

how many DVDs / episodes does the Not a Fan kit contain?

We use Kyle's previous series "H2O" which has 10 episodes for our chapel program (we watch 2-3 per year) and would like to include the Not a Fan series but need to know how many episodes the kit has on DVD to determine if it will fit.

We have children among our small group and I would say it is probably over the heads of kids less than 10. We have not found the series to cotain any content that was too graphic or inappropriate for kids of any age. Our group is using the adult version so I am not familiar with the teen version.

Question

What exactly is included in the Not a Fan Bible Study kit?

This sounds like a great study to offer; I am ordering the movie to watch with my family but would like to offer it to a group so I wondered what was in the study kit and what additional materials I would need to offer a complete study for others who can benefit from learning how to surrender their lives to Christ.

This kit includes the DVD with the 6 lessons on it, a leaders guide and a prayer/study journal. Be sure to do the work well ahead of time and review before your lesson each week. Encourage a lot of discussion. You really don't need to provide anything additional, other than encouraging your group to purchase the journal (separately) if you choose to go that route.
