Product Description

Find beauty and hope by facing and dealing with the messiness of family life.

The family is an imperfect institution. Broken people become broken parents who make broken families. But actually, broken is normal and exactly where God wants us.

In The Beauty of Broken, Elisa Morgan, one of today's most respected female Christian leaders, for the first time shares her very personal story of brokenness - from her first family of origin to the second, represented by her husband and two grown children. Over the years, Elisa's family struggled privately with issues many parents must face, including:

  • alcoholism and drug addiction
  • infertility and adoption
  • teen pregnancy and abortion
  • divorce, homosexuality, and death
Each story layers onto the next to reveal the brokenness that comes into our lives without invitation. "We've bought into the myth of the perfect family," says Elisa. "Formulaic promises about the family may have originated in well-meaning intentions, but such thinking isn't realistic. It's not helpful. It's not even kind."

Instead she offers hope in the form of "broken family values" that allow parents to grow and thrive with God. Values such as commitment, humility, relinquishment, and respect carry us to new places of understanding. Owning our brokenness shapes us into God's best idea for us and enables us to discover the beauty in ourselves and each member of our family.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a normal woman, who has repeatedly put one foot in front of the other to move closer to God, while striving to understand the reality of my days on this planet. I'm energetic, introspective, tenacious and learning to be faithful. I have a fabulous husband, two amazing children and a grandson I adore. Oh - and two dogs: Darla, a Rottie and Wilson, a Rottie-wanna-be.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I come from a broken family - where my mom struggled with alcohol and my father divorced us. I grew up determined that I would form a perfect second family. Problem is, I'm broken. We all are. And broken people make broken families in one way or another. I wrote this book to tell "the rest of my story" so that others can be freed from the myth of the perfect family and embrace the beauty in the broken.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Freedom. Forgiveness. Hope. Joy. My prayer is that others will see from my journey that there's no such thing as a perfect family - and that's okay. And that's even good because when we embrace the reality of our brokenness, we are just where God want us. He meets us in our needs. I LOVE my family. As unique and unexpected as each person's journey has been, I rejoice in who we were, who we are, and who we are becoming. Individually and together.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I was stunned at the way the words flowed out. The raw honesty. The embarrassing realities. The lessons. Each chapter revealed a lesson I knew somewhere deep within myself, but had yet to hold in my heart.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I've had LOTS of therapy! So thanks to all who God has used to bring me healing. God inspires me through quiet, nature and reading. Favorite authors in this journey have been Brennan Manning, Richard Rohr, Henri Nouwen, Carolyn Custis James, Geraldine Brooks, Parker J. Palmer, Barbara Brown Taylor, Sue Monk Kidd, Ann Voskamp, Anne Lamott, Philip Yancey, AW Tozer, CS Lewis...Oh I could go on and on!

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Life with Jesus is a journey. Keep going. We're not done till we're dead. If you're not dead, you're not done. God is at work. Watch him!
